Gli aggettivi possessivi . Possessive adjectives:

What you need to know about them:

  1. The reason why there are articles in the chart is because possessive adjective are always (*) preceded by definite articles (il – la – i – le)
  2. They are followed by and agree in gender and number with the noun possessed, not with the possessor.


il mio amico =-my (male) friend    –     i miei amici – my (male) friends
la mia amica – my (female) friend            –     le mie amiche –   my (female) friends

il suo libro – his/her book       –      i suoi libri – his/her book
We don’t know if the possessor is a man or a woman. We use the masculine form because libro is masculine

la sua macchina– his/her car       –      le sue macchine – his/her car
We don’t know if the possessor is a man or a woman. We use the feminine form because macchina is feminine

la loro casa – their house
many people, 1 house

le loro case – their houses
many people, many houses

(*) We always use definite articles + possessive adjective, except with family members (singular)
Mia nipote è giovane
Sua nonna è bionda
Nostro zio vive a Londra
Tuo cugino è bello

We do use the definite articles if we have family members (plural) and loro (both singular and plural)
Le mie nipoti sono giovani
Le sue nonne sono bionde
I nostri zii vivono a Londra
I tuoi cugini sono belli

Il loro papà è medico – I loro zii sono intelligenti
La loro nonna è simpatica – Le loro cugine sono castane
